| The 12th Japanese Film Festival is here! |
The 12th Japanese Film Festival has begun! Selected films have already toured to Canberra, Perth and Brisbane and Melbourne audiences were the first to enjoy the full kaleidoscope of genres that this year’s film festival has on offer, including a special appearance from Hiroshi Sugawara, director of Forget-Me-Not. The festival will shortly move on to Sydney where Minoru Kawasaki, director of Executive Koala and Monster X Strikes Back will be available for a Q&A session after the screenings of both of his films.
The Sydney program runs from 2 December to 9 December, opening with After School, a puzzling drama of love and affection that will amuse you, surprise you, deceive you, and then sweep you over like a wave that you never saw coming. The festival continues with a variety of films to enthrall, inspire and entertain. Our closing film was an award winner at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival and is Japan’s official entry for the 2009 Academy Awards’ foreign language category. Departures is a heartwarming story of a young man’s search for meaning in life, evoking universal themes of love, acceptance and understanding between family, friends and community, (don’t forget to bring some tissues!).
These are just some of the fascinating films on offer so make sure you don’t miss out!

| The Japanese Film Festival supports HammondCare |
This year, the Japanese Film Festival will be screening Memories of Tomorrow as a part of its 2008 program starring Ken Watanabe. In the film, Watanabe plays a 49-year-old man diagnosed with an early onset of Alzheimer’s. We follow his and his wife’s struggles as he combats the disability daily.
HammondCare is an independent Christian charity specialising in aged and dementia care. The Japanese Film Festival is proud to support HammondCare in raising awareness of the disease by donating 50 free tickets to HammondCare and their affiliates for Sydney’s screening of Memories of Tomorrow on Sunday 7 December at 1.00pm.
Professor Richard Fleming, Director of the Dementia Services Development Centre, a division of the HammondCare Group, will be our special guest at the screening to share with us the current state of dementia in NSW. There will also be an opportunity for donations to be made to support the work of HammondCare. |
