London : Phaidon, 2007.
ISBN: 978-0-7148-4785-6
Call #: 383.1 YOS
The Japanese Gothic & Lolita movement first started in the late 1990s in response to the outrageous styles of a new breed of rock band that wore heavy make-up and theatrical outfits. Centred originally in the streets and underground clubs of Osaka and Kobe, the movement quickly spread to Tokyo and is now a countrywide phenomenon. In this volume by cult photographer Masayuki Yoshinaga, we catch a glimpse of Japanese Gothic & Lolita street fashion at its most creative. |

| Anime and Manga - Japan's new 'soft' power? |
| Ask a Westerner their image of Japanese culture today and what answer would they give? In many cases, they would cite the distinctive illustrations and narratives of anime and manga as indicative of Japanese culture. The popularity of Japanese animation and manga comics has been steadily growing since the 1960s when Astro Boy flew on to television screens, entrancing millions of children around the world. However, in the 21st century the worldwide popularity of Japanese anime and manga has exploded, so much so that the Japanese government has introduced policies to promote anime and manga overseas as a way of further developing Japan’s image abroad. |
