Facetnate! - Guest Artist
The Facetnate! emerging artist program draws to a close this month, with Gemma Cuneo the final artist in contention for the Japan Foundation New Artist Award. For full details of each artist and exhibition please click here.

From the 12th of August, the Japan Foundation Gallery will be transformed into a temporary residence for the modern-day version of the obakemono, spirit-possessed creatures or monsters, evoked from hidden worlds with a warning for us all. The centrepiece, the Pokémori, is an amalgamation of the words ‘pocket’ and ‘mori’, (Japanese for ‘forest’), literally meaning ‘pocket forest’. It is an obakemono that embodies the schizophrenic attitude humans have towards the natural world.

Izakaya : the Japanese pub cookbook / Mark Robinson, photographs by Masashi Kuma.
Tokyo : Kodansha International, 2008.
ISBN: 978-4-7700-3065-8
Call #: 673.98 ROB

Covering food, drink, history, etiquette, and more, this is the first publication in English to delve into every aspect of the izakaya, or Japanese “pub” - a unique and vital cornerstone of Japanese food culture. Neither restaurant nor bar, “izakaya” is often translated into the English “pub”, although given its complex culinary and cultural characteristics, this seems inadequate. Uninhibited and welcoming, the izakaya serves mouth-watering, inexpensive small-plate cooking, along with free-flowing drinks.
