Kiju Fukuda
Embroiderer and National Living Treasure Mr Kiju Fukuda visited Australia in January to present a lecture and exhibition of his work at the Japan Foundation, Sydney. The event, which was organised by the Japanese Society of Sydney (JSS), provided a rare opportunity for members of the public to meet a National Living Treasure, and drew such interest that the venue was filled to capacity.

Mr Fukuda spoke with visitors to the gallery and with Japan Foundation staff about the history of embroidery, its development as an art form in Japan, and his views of the future for this most elegant of crafts.

Welcome Angela

The Japan Foundation, Sydney is pleased to welcome our new Programme Coordinator, Angela O’Connell, to the Japanese Language Department.

Farewell Mr Ueno
Yoshiyuki Ueno was Director of the Japan Foundation, Sydney from June 2004 until March 2008. On 28 March 2008, he returned to Tokyo and retired from the Japan Foundation. Prior to his appointment in Sydney, Mr Ueno worked in the Japan Foundation’s offices in Mexico and Bangkok.

Dear Omusubi readers,

I trust that you are all well. As of the end of March 2008, I have left my post in Sydney and returned to Japan. Having recently turned 60, I have retired from the Japan Foundation.

Thanks to the wonderful support of everyone whom I met there, I spent a productive and enjoyable 3 years and 9 months working in Sydney. I was particularly pleased to be in Sydney during the 2006 Australia–Japan Year of Exchange, when The Japan Foundation, Sydney held many varied Japan-related events. I strongly feel that our events would not have been anywhere near as successful had we not had the generous support of Omusubi readers and our members.

My successor as Director of The Japan Foundation, Sydney will most likely arrive in April or May. I hope that he or she will also feel at home in Sydney, and will benefit from the same generosity that I have been fortunate to receive during my time here.

I would like to wish all Omusubi readers and Japan Foundation members all the very best for the future, and extend my sincere thanks for your kindness and support over the last few years.

Yoshiyuki Ueno
