40th Australian National Final Japanese Language Speech Contest
The 40th Australian National Japanese Language Speech Contest was held on Saturday 10 October. We congratulate all of this year’s contestants and extend a warm thank you to the families and all audience members who took the time to support and ensure the success of the event. The first place winners from each division were:
High School Senior Division -  Irene Han (VIC), An Unforgettable Journey '忘れられない旅'
Open Beginner Division - Katharine Lam (NSW), Learning About Islamic Traditions and Culture 'イスラム教の習慣に触れて'
Open Division -  Joshua Leong (NSW), On the Other Side of the Wall 'オタクよ、壁の向こうへ'
Background Speaker - Makito Endo (NSW), Places of Belonging '居場所'

First place winners in each division at the National Final won a return airfare to Japan from Japan Airlines, and an accommodation package from Central Japan Railway Company.

Video Festival Contest Winners announced!
Thank you for all the great entries for our first year of our Video Festival Contest We have been pleased to have such a great response to our first year of our competition as we received over 95 entries!!
The judges were very impressed by the variety and creativity of the entries, and found the task of judging very enjoyable. As well as language, students displayed a wealth of skills, including acting ability and use of technology.

Art Speaks Japanese Comes Alive! Applications closed!
Applications for our new national art and language contest, ‘Art Speaks Japanese Comes Alive!’ have closed. All entries and winner details will be uploaded shortly.

We will also display the entries at our Art Gallery on 26th and 27th November, when our film screening will be held. (see below)
 
Japanese Film Festival School Screening background information sheet uploaded!
The film 'Summer Days With Coo' is being shown in this year's Japanese Film Festival in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Hobart and Canberra. We have made task sheets for use in the classroom in conjunction with this popular animation. Teachers can download the task sheet from our website, and view screening information http://13th.japanesefilmfestival.net/f-coo2.html.
 
Japanese Film Festival free screening of Happy Family Plan
At present the Japan Foundation, Sydney is producing a Japanese language and culture DVD resource comprising two discs.

Disc 1
contains the Japanese movie 「しあわせ家族計画 (Happy Family Plan)」and Disc 2 contains Japanese language and culture learning activities based on the movie. This DVD will be released in early 2010. To promote this exciting new project, we will hold 2 free screenings of the film as part of the 13th Japanese Film Festival in Sydney.

On this day we will also hold the ‘Art Speaks Japanese Comes Alive!’ exhibition at our Art Gallery. This is an exhibition of art works made by Japanese language students using their Japanese and creative skills. Please visit our gallery before or after the movie!

Workshops by our Language Consultants
On 26 October, our language consultant held workshops at the Professional Learning Seminar conducted by the Catholic Education and Association of Independent Schools of SA. Thank you for attending the seminar.
On 16 and 17 November, we will present workshops at the Japanese Professional Learning Seminar conducted by the Department of Education and Training in WA. Hope to meet you there!
 
2009 Survey on Japanese-Language Education Abroad Request for response
Every three years, the Japan Foundation conducts a survey to ascertain the current state of Japanese-language education overseas. The report of this survey is a source of valuable information to people and institutions around the world involved in Japanese-language education. The report also offers these people and institutions a useful platform for networking.

We hope you appreciate the significance of this survey and we would be very grateful if you could respond to the questionnaire by Monday 30 November 2009. If you have not received information about this, please email survey@jpf.org.au.

NALSSP - Japan Foundation In-Country Study Tour for ACT teachers
Eleven ACT teachers recently returned after participating in an in-country study tour to Japan with a 10 day language and culture program at the Japan Foundation Language Institute in Osaka. This project was an integral part of the ACT DET’s NALSSP strategy and followed 20 weeks of University study.

11th World Children's Haiku Competition by JAL Foundation In Japan!
JAL Foundation bienially organises the ‘World Children’s Haiku Contest’, and we are happy to announce that the 11th contest is to be held this year. All winning haiku will be collected and published next year as an anthology titled 'Haiku by World Children''.
